An ectopic lingual thyroid is a rare congenital anomaly in which functional thyroid tissue develops at the base of the tongue. The animation depicts its formation and growth resulting from incomplete embryonic migration of the thyroid gland. It may cause a sensation of a throat mass, difficulty swallowing, or hypothyroidism.
